Towing a horse float with electric brakes that weighs more than 2,000kg, it’s a legal requirement to have a breakaway system (AKA an emergency brake system) fitted. Team Discovery installs this system in every horse float manufactured, our safety guarantee to each Discovery client.
A breakaway unit is an emergency safety net which is activated if your float comes away from your car. If the vehicle separates from the horse float the pin (a wire line runs from the unit and should be fixed to your car, not your tow bar) is pulled from the switch and the breakaway system will be engaged, applying the electric brakes and brake lights.
In all our Discovery Horse Floats, the break-away unit is located in the front internal area of the trailer and is charged by your car’s Auxiliary power. Each time you take a trip with your float, you should check the charge of your breakaway unit by pressing the “charge” button.
NSW has been the first state to make it mandatory for all tow vehicles being used in conjunction with a breakaway kit to have a remote battery monitor installed. The monitor is installed near the driver and gives a visual and auditory warning if the battery has low charge, ensuring the system will work if the trailer separate.
